Farmer's Handbook: Kessex Hills - Basic Crafting Materials

The Farmer's Handbook is a column dedicated to guide you to drop locations of crafting materials that can be obtained across the world of Guild Wars 2.

Welcome back to another edition of Farmer's Handbook! This time we take a look at the centaur-contested land, Kessex Hills. As usual, this will be split into two parts. One for basic crafting materials and another for fine crafting materials.

In this article, we'll be focusing on the basic crafting materials you can find in Kessex Hills. This map is primarily populated by centaurs due to several areas in the map that are constantly under attack by them as well as a large underwater area of krait, a mining site for bandits as well as a dreary swamp of the undead.

Iron Ores
Type: Resource Node
Used by: Armorsmith, Weaponsmith, Jeweler, Huntsman, Artificer
Gathering Tool: Iron Mining Pick and above
Found in: Caves, Mountains and Cliff Edges
Salvaged from: Heavy Armor, Swords, Axes, Harpoons, Maces

Iron Veins

There is a cave behind the waterfall north of Cereboth Waypoint that has a Rich Iron Vein at the end. The cave is slightly hidden which is why I have uploaded a video that shows you how to get there. You get around 15 Iron Ores from the vein and I think is quite worth the trip. Note though that this is guarded by an Elite Ettin thus it may be helpful to bring a friend or gear up. The path leading to the cave also has some Iron Veins. The map in under the Soft Wood Logs section as you can also get a good number of Gummo Sapling nodes here. The Quarryide which is west of Kessex Haven Waypoint also has around 2 nodes of Iron Veins.

Silver Ores
Type: Resource Node
Used by: Jeweler
Gathering Tool: Iron Mining Pick and above
Found in: Caves, Mountains and Cliff Edges
Salvaged from: Rings, Amulets
Silver Veins and Gummo Saplings Rich Silver Vein
There is a Rich Silver Vein found in the island south east of Viathan Waypoint. You can also find nodes in the cave under Cereboth Waypoint, this area has a mix of both Iron and Silver Veins but you should find a couple in this vicinity. This path south of Overlord's Waypoint also has a couple of veins that are worth visiting. These are found in Meremoot hill. Following this path gives some Gummo Saplings as well for Soft Wood Logs.

Thin Leather Sections
Type: Monster Drop
Used by: Leatherworker, Tailor, Artificer, Huntsman
Gathering Tool: None
Drops from: Centaurs, Wargs
Salvaged from: Medium Armor, Thin Leather Strap
Large Centaur Camp for Leather and Wool
A good place to farm for leather is the Overlord's Greatcamp west of the Overlord's Waypoint. This camp has a lot of centaurs that drop Thin Leather Straps which you can salvage into Thin Leather Sections. As an added bonus, these centaurs drop Small Supply Bags that can contain Wool, Leather or an assortment of fine crafting materials. Note on Wool Scraps, this area is also a good place to farm these.

Wool Scraps
Type: Monster Drop
Used by: Armorsmith, Leatherworker, Tailor
Gathering Tool: None
Drops from: Ettin, Krait, Centaurs*
Salvaged From: Light Armor, Worn Rags, Small Supply Bags*
Ettin Camp for Small Supply Bags
This may sound a bit weird but the best place I have found to farm wool so far is the Overlord's Greatcamp west of Overlord's Waypoint. Yes you get a ton of centaurs that drop leather here but the Small Supply Bags they drop has a good chance for some pieces of Wool Scraps. Also, Light Armor drops at around level 20 also drop from these centaurs and can be salvaged for some more Wool. As a side note, you can find Ettins in a cave east of Cereboth Waypoint that drop Small Supply Bags as well and you can find Krait in Lake Viathan that can also drop Worn Rags which can be salvaged for Wool though from my experience, not as much as the centaur camp.

Jute Scraps
Type: Monster Drop
Used by: Armorsmith, Leatherworker, Tailor
Gathering Tool: None
Drops from: Bandits
Salvaged From: Light Armor, Worn Garments
Bandit Camp for Jute Scraps
If you are already in Kessex Hills but still need to farm some Jute Scraps, the Mudbay's Digs southeast of Overlord's Waypoint is a good spot since the bandits drop Worn Garments that salvage into Jute Scraps. These bandits also drop Small Stolen Supplies bags that have a chance to drop Wool Scraps, Thin Leather Sections and Fine Crafting Materials. Auld Red Wharf is also a good area west of Viathan Waypoint since the place is riddled with bandits.

Soft Wood Logs
Type: Resource Node
Used by: Weaponsmith, Huntsman, Artificer
Gathering Tool: Iron Logging Axe and above
Found in: Forests, Open Fields
Salvaged from: Torches, Staves, Foci, Hammers
Gummo Saplings Iron Veins and Gummo Saplings
Gummo Saplings
You get Soft Wood Logs via Gummo Saplings spread across the forest and grassy areas of Kessex Hills. I have found one area to usually have a good number of Gummo Saplings (around 3-4 nodes) and this is the path leading to the cave for the Rich Iron Vein north of Cereboth Waypoint. Another promising area is the path shown on the map east of Halacon Waypoint. This path contains around 3 to 4 nodes as well. The area north of Triskelion Vale also has around 3 nodes of Gummo Saplings.

Strawberries
Type: Resource Node
Used by: Cook
Gathering Tool: Iron Harvesting Sickle and above
Found in: Grassy Areas
Salvaged from: None
Strawberries
There is one spot in Kessex Hills where you will find a lot of strawberry patches. You get around 7 to 8 patches in this area and just has a couple of Ettins guarding it. This area is southeast from Cereboth Waypoint and is also a spot where you get a vista.

Clams
Type: Resource Node
Used by: Cook
Gathering Tool: Iron Harvesting Sickle and above
Found in: Underwater
Salvaged from: None
Viathan's Arm for Clams Cave in Viathan Lake for Clams
Viathan's Arm is a good place for clams where I usually get around 3 nodes following the path on the map. The cave in Viathan's Lake is also a good source of clams and has around 3 to 4 nodes within it. Note that this cave is also where the witch group event takes place.

Note that there is a bit of randomness in terms of the spawn of the nodes but this should give some information in terms of the general places to be in.

And that wraps up the basic materials from Kessex Hills. As you can see, this area has less concentrated levels of nodes for Iron, Silver and Soft Wood Logs as compared to Queensdale. However, the Overlord's Greatcamp is a really great place to farm just about anything if you can take a bit of randomness in your farming habits.
